FDA Reviewing YAZ Blood Clot Risks
Health Canada and the U.S. FDA are reviewing recent studies concluding the progestin drospirenone, found in Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills, may increase a woman’s risk for developing blood clots. The studies, published in the British Medical Journal, indicate a significantly increased risk of venous thromboembolism when compared to other birth control pills containing a different form of progestin combined with estrogen. Both agencies have reviewed previous studies and are currently evaluating the new studies to determine what actions, if any, are necessary.
The birth control pills and Bayer, their manufacturer, are the target of over 1,000 Yaz lawsuits in the U.S. and a pending class action lawsuit involving an estimated 600 women in Canada. The Yaz lawyers allege health problems including gallbladder disease and blood clots stemming from the use of Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills.
